Inside Faith: Flatirons Church: Influence killers
Our message this week was from one of the pastors at Flatirons named Arron Schoeder. It was a message that challenged us to look at how easily we create enemies. I can identify with that because I find it easy to slip into that attitude of seeing others who disagree with me or have a lifestyle different from me as enemies. For me that is partially because I have learned from those who lead, especially in politics, tend to attack their opponents rather than just simply arguing a point of view. I do it on a smaller but much more important basis. My marriage can become a wreck when I see my wife as the enemy. Shortly after we were married, we went to the Family Life Conference. The first talk on Friday evening was about identifying the true enemy of our marriage. The simple answer is the devil made me do it. But, aside from Flip Wilson’s humor, there was a spiritual truth. The devil is the enemy and would love to destroy every relationship except those who simply use and abuse others. But I believe I also play a role in that. Whenever I find myself in disagreement with my wife on something, I know the right thing to do is ask questions and listen with an ear towards reconciliation. Yet it is so easy to become offended and defensive and argue in favor of my being the innocent one and she, being the villain. Fortunately, my wife is a professional Mental Health Therapist. So, she often sees things a bit more clearly than I. However, I do have a choice. I can no longer claim ignorance. I made a purposeful decision to make her the enemy. That decision hurt my testimony as a person who claims to follow Christ, and it is harmful to my marriage. I still struggle with that from time to time, but it is much better than when we started our journey 43 years ago.
