Kanawha County deputies investigating alleged excessive force by police chief
KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WCHS) — Kanawha County deputies are investigating allegations of excessive force after an incident involving the Cedar Grove police chief Monday. Deputies were called to the parking lot of Capitol Recycling in Shrewsbury on Monday afternoon after a reported physical altercation between a man and Cedar Grove Police Chief Jack Ice, according to a news release from the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office.

Putnam County Girl Scout receives high honor, national scholarship
PUTNAM COUNTY, W.Va. (WCHS) — A Putnam County Girl Scout has received a $5,000 scholarship in recognition of her award-winning work. Morgan Harris, an ambassador in the Girl Scouts of Black Diamond Council, developed a project to create an official Monarch Waystation pollinator garden for butterflies at Black Knight Municipal Park in Beckley, according to a news release.

Health center to develop programs to fight WV food insecurity
A West Virginia community health center is participating in a program addressing food scarcity. The National Association of Community Health Centers’ 2024 Innovation Incubator creates ways to expand access to healthy foods. Cabin Creek Health Systems, based in Charleston, will have funding and guidance from experts to help it design and test community-based solutions.
Hinkle shoots 66, takes two-shot lead into final round; Hawkins, Cook remain tied in girls championship
McCartney Hinkle will enter the third and final round of the West Virginia Junior Amateur Championship with a two-shot lead. This, after Hinkle, a resident of Bluefield, Va., and a rising junior at Graham High School, fired a second-round 66 Tuesday at Canaan Valley Resort to move to 9-under par through 36 holes of the 54-hole event.

Mountain State Art & Craft Fair to celebrate Appalachian culture through arts, food, music
RIPLEY — The 2024 Mountain State Art and Craft Fair showcases juried artisans, live music, heritage demonstrations and food from throughout West Virginia and Appalachia. The MSACF is taking place Thursday through Sunday at Cedar Lakes Conference Center near Ripley from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. daily. Admission is $7 daily with seniors over 55 and children ages 3-11 admitted for $5. There are acres of free parking available.
