Aerial black fly treatments scheduled for July 2
Greenbrier, Co. (WVDN) – The West Virginia Department of Agriculture will be conducting aerial treatments for biological suppression of black flies on the Greenbrier, New, and Bluestone rivers on Tuesday, July 2, weather, and water levels permitting. Based on weather and water levels, the treatments may potentially continue into Wednesday, July 3rd. Changing Climate Contributes to Record Tornado Season
Weather researchers at Iowa State University say a shifting climate and warmer ocean temperatures are partially responsible for a record number of tornadoes this spring. More than 100 were reported in Iowa, in May alone. Eleven hundred tornadoes were reported regionwide in May, from Texas to Minnesota and from West Virginia to Georgia. That’s more than twice the 30-year average. One of the fiercest killed five people and injured dozens in rural Greenfield, Iowa.

Jim Justice’s 4-year-old pure breed Babydog joined the ranks of Abraham Lincoln, Civil War soldiers and odes to Appalachian folk music in new murals under the golden dome of the state Capitol last week, alongside other state cultural symbols. Tucked into a mural about artistic traditions, the dog sits placidly between a banjo player and an artist painting the Seneca Rocks, one of the state’s best-known natural landmarks, in West Virginia’s Monongahela National Forest.
