Sign dedication focuses on regional history

A historical marker is going up on the Charlotte County-Lunenburg County line near Keysville later this month. This gateway sign to be dedicated is one of four replacement signs for old and damaged county historical markers at four corners of Lunenburg, including the line with Charlotte County.

That’ll take place on Route 40 near Keysville on Saturday, July 27, at 10 a.m. Parking is available at a nearby Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) lot. This will be an Informal and short service (about 15 minutes). Water will be provided. Please bring your umbrella to deflect strong sun or rain.

In addition to this location at the Lunenburg-Charlotte boundary where the dedication will occur, two signs are at Lunenburg’s common boundaries with Mecklenburg County, on route 49 and route 138. Additionally, the fourth sign is at Lunenburg’s boundary with Nottoway County on route 40. Signs contain significant historical facts about each county on the side that the reader sees as he enters that county.

The project was initiated by the Lunenburg County Historical Society under the auspices of the Virginia Department of Historic Resources. Money for Lunenburg’s share of the signs was raised by the historical society. County governments, like Charlotte County, contributed financially for their share of the cost to cover their portions of each sign.

The dedication of the sign at the Lunenburg-Charlotte boundary on Route 40 will serve as the ceremonial dedication for all four signs. This site was chosen for safety reasons due to nearby parking facilities that would prevent attendees having to park and exit their vehicles at roadside.
