NORMAN, Okla. (KFOR) – Many in the metro were cleaning up Monday after Saturday night’s storms. That includes those in Norman who saw some damage at the Max Westheimer Airport.

There were some grounded planes seen under sunny skies Monday morning just days after the airport could be considered a definite no fly zone.

Update: 25 tornadoes recorded during severe weather outbreak, NWS

“It could have been a lot worse,” aviation student Drake Irby said. “After looking at all the other damage everywhere else, we’re very lucky.”

Saturday night, those same aircraft were in hangars with loose debris lying around after storms blew through the area.

“I was kind of wondering, you know, how is my flight training going to look now? Are the planes okay?” aviation student Luke Copeland said.

“We had one plane that got some pretty good damage, and then whenever the hangar door fell in, apparently it messed up another one of the planes that we have,” Irby said.

KFOR is still awaiting official word from the university as to exactly how much damage was done. Some damage on the side of buildings and even some debris could be seen as of Monday morning. Repair crews were also working on the hangar door that “fell in” according to Irby.

    “It’s very unfortunate,” Irby said.

The university did issue a statement Saturday night that said “minor damage occurred at Max Westheimer airport and is being assessed.” More information is expected to be released sometime Monday.

On Monday evening, OU released a statement saying “We are continuing to assess minor damage at Max Westheimer Airport stemming from Saturday’s severe weather. There were several hangars and aircraft with slight damage.”
