SULPHUR, Okla. (KFOR) — Clean up is underway in Sulphur after taking a direct hit from tornadoes over the weekend.

Mostly rubble is all that is left in the small downtown of Sulphur. Devastation and tragedy are an understatement as local business owners say the area was starting to thrive, only for all of their hard work to be wiped away in minutes.

“Sunday was quite shocking,” said Madeline Jack Little, co-owner of 3rd & Broadway. “Nothing like this has ever happened to Sulphur.”

Sulphur residents still in shock days later.

“A lot of disarray, everything was in disarray,” Madeline said.

Downtown Sulphur took a direct hit, leaving business owners to pick up what mother nature didn’t carry away.

“It’s been really hard on everybody, but you can really see everybody pull together to help one another,” Patrick Little said.

The Littles were able to salvage some of the items inside their boutique.

“We were able to grab clothing, shoes, purses, some earrings from the rubble, and they really are still in not bad condition,” Madeline said. “So, we’re going to wash all that clothing as best as we can and hopefully donate them to the families in need.”

While the rebuilding process will be a long one, the hope is this once-vibrant downtown will flourish again.

“We’re hoping with a lot of state and federal assistance that we can kind of get a clean slate on downtown and hopefully revitalize it again into the beautiful, charming town that it was,” Madeline said.
