SASAWKA, Okla. ( KFOR ) — An Oklahoma town is facing an unusual problem, stray dogs are being dumped and they have no shelter to house them.

Brenda Myrick is the Mayor of Sasawka, a small town facing a big issue.

The Sasawka town hall is currently housing at least five stray dogs and Myrick is in desperate need of help.

“I need help here in Sasakwa,” said Myrick. “We’ve had people that just dump dogs.”

Myrick said the city has been recently overrun with stray dogs and with no animal control in town, she had to take matters into her own hands.

“The five dogs that are up at the town hall right now that we can’t use, there’s no air conditioning. I take one gallon frozen up there so it’ll melt for their cold water.”

Myrick has another group of five stray dogs at her house.

“I help people and these are my people too,” said Myrick. “I love animals.”

The love is so strong, Myrick said she spends most of her days making phone calls trying to get help.

“I’ve called all kinds. I even called called Tulsa SPCA, full, friends with paws, full,” said Myrick. “Even the bigger rescues, all of Oklahoma is full.”

People that live in town said without Myrick, they don’t believe the dogs would have made it.

“People are just mean, and these animals, they don’t deserve it,” said Tonya Smith, a resident.

The Mayor is currently paying out of pocket to care for the dogs.

“I got like $70 in the bank, but I have to go buy dog food,” said Myrick.

She said all she wants is for each dog to find a forever home.

“I just need somebody to come and get them that can do more for them then me,” said Myrick.

The Mayor said if you are interested in the dogs, they are giving them away for free.
