    OU to honor ’74 and ’75 Football National Championship teams at season opener

    NORMAN, Okla. (KFOR) – The University of Oklahoma Athletics Department announced Friday it will honor the 1974 and 1975 national championship OU football teams during the Sooners’ season opener.

    This season marks the 50th anniversary of OU’s 1974 national title and OU officials confirm the celebration will take place against Temple on Friday, August 30.

    Former Head Coach Barry Switzer and many of his players, coaches and support staff members are expected to be recognized on Owen Field at halftime. OU officials say, Switzer, who began his head coaching career with a 29-0-1 record and is also a College Football Hall of Fame member, directed 12 of his 16 OU squads to top-10 national finishes, with 10 teams finishing in the AP top 5 and nine in the AP top 3.

    The 1974 and ’75 national titles were the fourth and fifth in OU football history and the first and second of Switzer’s career (he added a third in 1985), according to OU.
