OKLAHOMA CITY ( KFOR ) – Families living at an apartment complex in northwest Oklahoma City said they are fed up with unwanted visitors inside their complex.

Surveillance video captured a woman inside the complex NW 23rd St. allegedly stealing mail from several mailboxes.

“It’s honestly kind of frightening,” said Madison Fryar, who has lived at the complex for three years. “She was here for about an hour and a half and she kind of camped out on our stairwell, going through other people’s mail.”

Fryar said she and her neighbors started noticing missing mail several months ago, so they installed cameras and caught the woman in the act. The black mailboxes have locked lids but the video showed the woman pulling mail out of the boxes. She was also seen carrying a backpack filled with packages.

“The mail that was left on our stairwell was torn open envelopes,” said Fryar.

People living in the complex filed a police report, as well as a report with the United States Postal Service.

Last year, the USPS launched a program called Project Safe Delivery in an effort to cut down on mail theft. It has led to more than 500 arrests for mail theft. Fryar and her neighbors said they have become increasingly tired of crime at their doorstep.

“We also had a break in into my boyfriend’s vehicle that was parked just right out here,” said Fryar. “It frightens me to think I’m going to walk out that door and not know that somebody is there and catch them in the wrong moment and then something is going to happen.”

Cameras also caught a man sleeping on the stairwell for several hours.

So far, no arrests have been made surrounding the mail theft and the families have not gotten any answers in the case.
