This year, fair officials are implementing a new policy to help ensure the safety of guests.
After 5 p.m., anyone under the age of 18 needs to be accompanied by a parent, legal guardian or chaperone 25 years old or older. Adults are allowed to accompany up to five minors.
“It is not our intent to put minors outside the gate when it’s dark after hours or whatever,” said State Fair spokesman Scott Munz. “We’re concerned about the safety of everyone, including those minors who have to exit the property.”
Safe rides
For some, the rides are arguably the best part of the Oklahoma State Fair.
“I would say the rides are 70 to 80 percent of the reason why people come,” said Allen McElyea, the Chief Amusement Ride Inspector for the Oklahoma Department Of Labor.
According to McElyea, inspectors have been hard at work since Saturday. As of Wednesday, almost all of the about 70 rides have already been checked out.

Making sure everything is safe is a responsibility McElyea takes very seriously.
“I have four grandkids. So when I’m looking at a ride, I’m thinking, ‘Would I let my grandkids on here?’” said McElyea. “We don’t OK anything we wouldn’t put our own kids on.”
Accessibility
The Oklahoma State Fair is working to make the 2024 fair accessible to all Oklahomans, and that starts with restrooms.
KFOR’s Natalie Clydesdale spoke with Dan Lusk with Momentum Refresh Wednesday morning about accessible restrooms that have been installed at the fairgrounds.
Officials say Momentum Refresh restrooms are the first fully accessibly and universally designed restrooms in the U.S.
The restrooms are equipped with a lift, a toilet with a bidet, adjustable grab bars, a powered height-adjustable sink and motion-detection devices.
One of the most helpful parts of the restroom is the powered, height-adjustable, adult-sized changing table with a hoist included.
“A great opportunity for people to come on out to the fair. Come all day and stay all day and you’ve got the appropriate facilities here.” said Lusk.
“Clouds will gradually decrease throughout the day. Humidity will be higher, due to Tropical Storm Francine moving east of us. Lows will drop to the low 60s under clear skies.” says Sutton.
Friday will be warmer, with a high near 90 and a southeast breeze. As an upper level ridge moves overhead, highs will soar to the mid 90s this weekend.
A few showers or storms are possible Monday through Wednesday. A powerful cold front could arrive next weekend, bringing relief from the heat and (hopefully) rain chances.
The Oklahoma State Fair will be open from Thursday, September 12, to Sunday, September 22.
