Sebastian Parra and Robert Roberts were convicted in the death of Bennie Alcala Jr., who was shot near an electric vehicle charging station on Stockdale Highway on Aug. 24, 2022.

Prosecutor John Allen said Parra handed Roberts a gun to rob Alcala, and Roberts then shot Alcala in the back as he ran.

    17 News live-blogged the verdict.

Initially only Roberts was charged. Parra, the prosecution’s key witness at Roberts’ preliminary hearing, said he met Roberts that night and had nothing to do with the killing.

A grand jury later indicted Parra after it was revealed he had a gun registered to him and had lied about its whereabouts.

The defense attorneys for both men each said the other defendant was to blame.
