Houchin asks for blood donations for Hurricane Debby relief

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Houchin Community Blood Bank is asking for donations in response to Hurricane Debby’s Blood Emergency Readiness Corps activation.

Houchin officials say the Blood Emergency Readiness Corps is a national collation of emergency response blood banks.

Officials say Houchin has actively been sending blood to SunCoast Blood Centers in Bradenton, Florida.

Type O blood is the most critical need but all blood types are encouraged to donate in the coming weeks. Local needs remain the blood bank’s top priority.

“Everyone needs blood regardless of where they live. This is the perfect opportunity for Kern County to show just how giving we are, and how strong of a community we are when it comes to saving lives,” Shane Hubbard, Marketing and Communications Manager at Houchin, said in a news release.

Hubbard said the Blood Emergency Readiness Corps was created for moments like this.
