BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Most students in Kern County look forward to going to Camp KEEP in their 6th grade year. But, for some, the cost makes it out of reach.

Students in Wasco got a big surprise when they learned the cost of going to camp will be completely covered this year.

That’s because Strata Credit Union and California Resources Corporation presented a check for $100,000 Tuesday night to the Wasco Unified School District.

The companies say when they heard it costs $400 per student for Camp KEEP, they wanted to help and make sure students could go regardless of their family’s financial situation.

“This is the first time that Camp KEEP will be offered to our students in a very very very long time. To be perfectly honest with you I cannot even recall the last year that we sent any students to Camp KEEP,” Patrick Acosta, principal at Thomas Jefferson Middle School, said.
