BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET)– Launched nearly 20 years ago, the Women and Girl’s Fund have addressed some serious challenges here in Kern County.

There are some non-profits with really great mission statements that don’t get enough funding.
Funding that could be the catalyst for changing someone’s life.

‘Now I just sell steaks out of the back of a van’: Is the “Great Resignation” making a comeback?

That’s where The Women’s and Girls’ Fund has stepped in year after year to ensure women get the resources needed.

It’s no secret that Kern County is met with lots of different issues, just like everywhere else.

However, there are non-profits and individuals that truly want to see the next generation of women overcome their struggles and succeed.

The people behind the Women’s and Girls’ Fund are part of that. They’re even willing to contribute to nonprofits that teach the basics, like money.

“There’s been a few organizations that teach financial literacy specifically or even just with FAFSA,” Teems Tulfo, the Director of Community Impact with Kern Community Foundation, said.

FAFSA could be a very daunting task, especially for first generation college students. The funding provided from The Women’s And Girls’ fund helps bridge that gap.

Education can help mitigate the risk of being in poverty.

Remember your mom telling you the classic line of “you are who you hang around.” The fund take that saying literally-placing non-profits in a position where they can mentor each other and discuss what the Women and Girls of Kern County need.

“Last year we started a program commemorating the National Mentor Day where we bring all the nonprofits together and let them share and talk about what they’re doing and maybe glean things from each other or for new people who want to start,” Chair of the Women’s and Girls’ Fund, Dayna Nichols, said.

If you’re a nonprofit, the application process begins with the submission of a Letter of Intent to apply for funding and has a hard deadline of 5 p.m. on Oct. 14.
