BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — You can do your part and help save the lives of deserving animals at the “Clear the Shelters” event this Saturday.

On Sep. 7, the Bakersfield Animal Care Center on South Mt. Vernon Avenue is waiving adoption fees from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Matt Buck with the BACC joined 17 News at Noon to discuss the dire situation at local shelters right now and how you can help.

“It’s our biggest event of the year,” said Buck. “We’re hoping to have 50 or more adoptions. Last year we had 42 dogs and six cats adopted.”

Buck says the shelter is in a similar situation as last year, and the number of dogs keeps on growing.

This Clear the Shelters event will be dedicated to a fallen friend, Matt Nelson, according to Buck.

The 17 News team will be there to encourage adoptions and — with your help — make a dent in Kern’s canine crisis.
