BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The Betty Ann Ong Foundation is inviting the community to honor Betty Ong at Fire Station 15’s 9/11 memorial ceremony Wednesday .

Ong worked as a flight attendant with American Airlines on Sept. 11, 2001. Shortly after Flight 11’s takeoff from Boston Logan Airport to Los Angeles, her airplane was hijacked.

One sister’s heroic sacrifice, another sister’s dedication, 20 years after 9/11

Ong made a call to ground reservation agents, making her the first person to warn authorities America was under attack. With the help of peers, Ong was able to reveal the hijacker’s identities before the plane crashed.

Cathie Ong-Herrera, Betty Ong’s sister, will dedicate a new memorial bench in Ong’s honor at the fire station located at 1315 Buena Vista Road beginning at 8:45 a.m.
