BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The Kern County Sheriff’s Office said conditions of the water in the Kern River near Highway 178 were too dangerous to recover a submerged vehicle Tuesday afternoon.

In a statement released by the Kern County Sheriff’s Office, officials said search and rescue crews were called to the area near the river and Highway 178 on July 23 for report of a possibly submerged vehicle.

Officials said because of the clarity of the water, high water levels and unsafe conditions at the river did not allow for search team divers to conduct a recovery mission for the vehicle. The statement read, the sheriff’s office has been in contact with the Army Corps of Engineers to monitor water levels and flow.

As soon as conditions at the river improve, the sheriff’s office said, divers will enter the water to attempt to recover the submerged vehicle.

No other information about the incident was released.
