BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A man accused of resisting arrest in separate incidents — on the second occasion spraying bear mace at multiple deputies and a K-9 — appeared in court Wednesday.

Christian Dumas, 23, pleaded not guilty to three counts of using tear gas on a peace officer, three counts of resisting arrest and a single count of willfully harming a peace officer’s dog, all felonies.

He also pleaded not guilty to two misdemeanor counts of resisting a peace officer.

Court Commissioner Sally Ackerknecht ordered Dumas held without bail. He’s due back in court Sept. 23.

According to sheriff’s officials, deputies on Sept. 2 stopped a vehicle at the Motel 6 on Olive Tree Court. A passenger, Dumas, assaulted deputies and got away despite shots being fired, officials said.

There had been two warrants out for his arrest before the incident occurred, officials said.

Early on Sept. 7, deputies responded to a tip that Dumas had been spotted near the intersection of North Chester Avenue and Roberts Lane, according to a probable cause declaration that became available Wednesday.

Deputies found him on East Moneta Avenue and he ran, according to the declaration.

During the foot chase, Dumas sprayed bear mace at deputies and the dog, according to the declaration. Deputies used force to take him into custody, the filing says.
