    Man accused of setting fire to Downtown Bakersfield building appears in court

    BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A man accused of starting a fire that resulted in hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage to a building in Downtown Bakersfield was arraigned in Superior Court on Wednesday.

    Michael Leon Webber, 48, pleaded not guilty to charges of arson, drug possession and possession of tear gas by a person with a prior conviction. He’s due back in court Sept. 24.

    The fire occurred Sept. 2 and caused an estimated $750,000 in damage to the “Toucan” building at 19th and N streets, city fire officials said.
