    Man sentenced to over 3 years in prison for assaulting immigration detention officer

    BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A man has been sentenced to prison for assaulting an immigration detention officer in Kern County in 2022.

    Officials with the Department of Justice in Fresno said Arsen Tonoyan, 48, an Armenian national formerly residing in Los Angeles assaulted a detention officer at the ICE Golden State Annex detention center in Bakersfield.

    Tonoyan walked up to a detention officer on March 7, 2022, and hit the officer multiple times, put the officer in a chokehold and took the officer to the ground, according to federal prosecutors.

    The officer suffered a concussion and other injuries from the attack.

    Tonoyan was sentenced to three years and five months Wednesday and he must pay $1,000 in restitution.
