BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A new Amazon delivery station in Bakersfield has shortened package deliveries by days. The center opened on Wilson Road in July and employs over 100 employees.

At a facility tour, 17 News followed how packages can get to your doorstep, quicker than ever before.

There are several Amazon facilities in Kern County but this is the only delivery center. It shortened the time packages were delivered. From four or five days down to one or two.

“We’ll sort the package, and then from there we’ll sort it to the vans, and then from there the driver will have their itinerary,” said Jordan Ward, the site manager at the facility.

A customer’s order goes to a fulfillment center first, then the item is sent to the distribution center in a freight truck. The trucks park overnight, are unloaded in the morning and packages are sorted and shelved.

After the packages are processed they are then sent down the conveyor belt, “From there they are gonna go around a corner, and fall into what we call hampers,” said Ward. “The associate will then take the package out, and put it into its corresponding bag, and then each bag is assigned to a driver.”

Then they are loaded onto local delivery trucks.

Jose Jiminez has been a delivery driver with Amazon for five months, taking trips every day to the customer’s doorstep, and says that on an average day, one driver would deliver 200 to 350 packages.

“What makes me happy is seeing the customers happy,” Jiminez said.
