‘Toucan’ building developer says plans still on for co-working space in fire damaged structure

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The real estate developer who co-owns Bakersfield’s “Toucan” building, says the Labor Day fire that gutted the unique downtown structure will not derail plans for its renovation.

Co-owner Tomas Del Toro-Diaz confirmed to 17 News the building at 19th and N streets reduced by the fire to a concrete and brick shell, will make a full comeback. History demands it he said.

The building was originally a Greyhound bus station and was later Thompson’s Pet Land, whose owners added the toucan painting out in front.

Del Toro-Diaz and partner Branden Dailey still plan to turn the “Toucan” building into a co-working space run by the International Workplace Group. It will also have a coffee shop or bar.

Michael Webber pleaded not guilty last week to an arson charge in connection to the fire.
