BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The fall season is upon us, yet triple digit temperatures aren’t going away any time soon in the Golden Empire.

If your car’s AC isn’t working, the Cool Air Rebate program wants to help you stay cool and is offering financial help to fix your vehicle’s leaking air conditioning systems.

Jason Colaw and Dakotah Massie from McWilliams and Walden Repair Shop joined 17 News to discuss how the program works and how you can apply.

The program is open to all California residents who own a car manufactured between 1993 and 2019, or have an older vehicle that has been retrofitted with R-134a refrigerant.

Through Oct. 18, the program is covering all diagnostics. Even if your care isn’t covered, it doesn’t hurt to get your car checked out at no cost if you qualify.

    Requirements:

    1. Must be a California Resident
    2. Vehicle must be manufactured between 1993-2019 with a non-working air conditioner because of leaking R-134a. The repair shop is offering free diagnostic screening until Oct. 19 for anyone who qualifies and wants to bring the car in. We find many of these vehicles when people come in for SMOG.
    3. Financially, people will automatically qualify if they are receiving Medi-CAL or CalFresh.

California residents can submit an application at CoolAirRebate.org .
