BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The California Department of Public Health is confirming a total of six human cases of the bird flu across the Golden State and all are in Central Valley patients, with a possible seventh case waiting to be confirmed.

According to the CDPH, the individuals all had direct contact with infected dairy cattle. Two of the human cases originated from the same Central Valley farm.

In addition to the six confirmed cases, the CDPH is aware and waiting on results of one additional human case, also in the Central Valley. That specimen has been sent to CDC for confirmatory testing.

The department also said that given the amount of exposure to infected cows, evidence continues to suggest only animal-to-human spread of the virus in California.

The bird flu was first detected in dairy cattle in California in August. Health department officials say the risk to the public is low, and that pasteurized milk and dairy products continue to be safe to consume.
