Rare comet photographed over Inyokern

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — One of the rarest of sights was captured in a photograph over the skies of Inyokern this week.

Steve Urner shared a photo of a comet traveling the solar system on Tuesday. The conditions were right to take the photo and see it in Inyokern.

The comet named Tsuchinshan-ATLAS made its closest approach to Earth on Saturday, but it should be visible through Oct. 26. Your best chance to see it is a little after sunset and looking west. Ideally, you’re in an area with low amounts of light pollution.

Comets are discovered every year, but many burn up near the sun or are so far away you can only see them with special equipment.

The comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS won’t be visible on Earth for another 80,000 years.
