BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and one group is doing their part to make a difference here in Kern County.

On Oct. 22, the Kern County Family Justice Center will host a special community event designed to inform and empower those affected by domestic violence.

Assistant District Attorney, Andrea Kohler, joined 17 News at Sunrise to talk about this year’s theme, “Safety Starts with a Plan.”

Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in open discussions, gain valuable knowledge, and create a personalized safety plan — all in one supportive environment.

“We’re hoping there will be victims that attend, as well as community members, or people who know a relative or close friend that is being victimized,” said Kohler. “The theme this year is Safety Starts with a Plan.”

Kohler says there will be a panel of people describing experiences and a safety planning session including preparing a ‘go-bag’ and what is needed in certain situations.
