Man guilty of sexually abusing teen 20 years ago

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A Kern County jury on Wednesday found a man guilty of sexually abusing a teenager from 1999 to 2004.

Javier Chavez, 61, faces up to 20 years in prison and lifetime sex offender registration, prosecutors said. Sentencing is scheduled Sept. 5.

The victim, now an adult, reported the abuse in 2022, according to a District Attorney’s Office release. Interviews and pretext phone calls corroborated the allegations, prosecutors said. The victim was 13 when the abuse began.
