HONOLULU (KHON2) — Likini Street Mini Park in Salt Lake was renamed Tuesday to honor Howard Shima, a prominent local advocate.

A Maui native and 56-year Salt Lake resident, Shima, now 97, has dedicated decades to community service. His notable contributions include serving in the U.S. Army, working as Director and Building Superintendent for the City and County of Honolulu under former Mayor Frank Fasi, and serving on Neighborhood Board No. 18 for 24 years.

Shima also volunteered extensively in the Salt Lake area, advocating for his neighborhood’s 50-meter pool, the Likini Street Mini Park which now bears his name, and maintaining cleanliness as “Graffiti Buster.”

The park’s name change was formalized through City Council Resolution 24-167, authored by Councilmember Radiant Cordero.
