HONOLULU (KHON2) — As hurricane season gets underway, and the most recent tropical storm watch issued, homeowners are advised to review their insurance policies to ensure they cover hurricanes and flooding.

According to DTRIC Insurance, policyholders should make any necessary changes before a watch or warning is issued, as coverage cannot be added once these alerts are in effect.

Mike from DTRIC emphasized the importance of having a “loss of use” provision in your policy.

This provision helps cover the cost of temporary living arrangements, such as a hotel or Airbnb, if your home becomes uninhabitable after a storm.

DTRIC also recommends that homeowners take inventory of their belongings, including photographing valuable items and recording serial numbers of electronics.

Additionally, now is a good time to prepare emergency kits.

Essentials should include a 14-day supply of food and water (one gallon per person per day), a flashlight with extra batteries, a first aid kit, a manual can opener, hand sanitizer, and any necessary medications.

Pet owners should also ensure they have supplies for their animals.
