HONOLULU (KHON2) — Hawaiian Electric is preparing for potentially dangerous conditions that could lead to public safety power shutoffs in high-risk wildfire areas.

The utility company is closely monitoring the situation but has not yet decided if shutoffs will be necessary.

Hawaiian Electric spokesperson Darren Pai noted that some areas have experienced extended droughts, increasing the risk of dry vegetation and wildfires.

“We’re keeping a close eye on the situation. We want to let our customers know that while there is a possibility we may need to activate power shutoffs, we haven’t made that decision yet,” Pai said.

The company will aim to provide as much advance notice as possible to affected customers if shutoffs are implemented.
