    Live blog: Delaware State at Hawaii

    In a battle of the first state against the 50th, Delaware State visits the University of Hawaii football team in a Week 0 matchup at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex.

    The FCS Hornets, who endured travel issues to to arrive in Hawaii, arrived as a team on Thursday.

    Hawaii 35, Delaware State 14, Final

    9:06: Delaware State punts after the two minute warning and Hawaii runs out the clock with backup quarterback John-Keawe Sagapolutele to eke out a 35-14 win. The Rainbow Warriors will host UCLA next week. Stay with KHON2 on-air and online for continuing coverage.

    9:01: TOUCHDOWN HAWAII. Schager ends a long drive with a 1-yard rushing score to essentially seal the game for UH. ‘Bows up 35-14 with 3:44 left in the third quarter.

    8:53: Delaware State goes three-and-out following a sack by Wynden Hoohuli. Hawaii still up 28-14 and gets the ball back at around midfield after a Tylan Hines return with 7:01 left.

    8:50: Following yet another three-and-out for Hawaii, Lucas Borrow punts to the DSU 30 with 9:24 remaining.

    8:47: After a series of miscues and penalties, Delaware State punts to the Hawaii 14 with 10:55 left.

    8:39: A windy kick nearly gives Hawaii the ball back, but Delaware State recovers on its own 17.

    8:38: TOUCHDOWN ‘BOWS. Schager hits a wide open Dekel Crowdus in stride for a 29 yard score with 13:40 left. Hawaii extends its lead to 28-14.

    FOURTH QUARTER

    8:30: Hawaii forces another punt and gets the ball at the Delaware State 45 after a nice return by Tylan Hines with 45 seconds left in the third quarter.

    8:24: Hawaii’s drive stalls on the Delaware State 42 and Lucas Borrow punts yet again to the DSU 7 with 4:14 left in the third quarter.

    8:18: Hawaii’s defense promptly forces a three-and-out and punt and gets the ball back with 5:59 left in the third quarter on its own 45.

    8:12: TOUCHDOWN UH. A 15-yard rush by Brayden Schager puts Hawaii back in the lead, 21-14, with 7:42 left in the third quarter.

    8:06: A short kick gives Hawaii the ball on its own 33.

    8:02: TOUCHDOWN HORNETS. Jaden Sutton runs it in from 6 yards after a sustained drive, led by a 42-yard pass from Adams to a wide open Ryan Lee. Delaware State has tied things up at 14 with 11:10 left in the third quarter. This is stunning.

    7:55: After the second half kickoff, Delaware State will begin from its own 25 after a touchback.

    THIRD QUARTER

    7:31: Delaware State kicked from its own 20, but a holding call puts UH back on its own 30, so the ‘Bows take a knee. Hawaii leads 14-7 at halftime, but Delaware State will receive to start the second half. Not the first 30 minutes many were expecting.

    7:30: TOUCHDOWN DELAWARE STATE. A 10-yard rush by Marqui Adams cuts the UH lead to 14-7 with 12 seconds left in the first half.

    7:21: Another punt gives Delaware State the ball on its own 23 with 1:54 left in the second quarter.

    7:17: Hawaii’s defense has certainly done its job so far forcing another punt. Hawaii gets the ball at its own 35 with 4:56 left in the first half.

    7:12: Offense still a struggle for Hawaii, which punts again to the Delaware State 26 with 6:39 left in the first half.

    7:03: After another punt, Hawaii will begin from its own 18 with 9:22 left in the second quarter.

    6:58: Hawaii goes three-and-out yet again and punts to the Delaware State 43 with 12:37 left in the second quarter.

    6:55: Hawaii has not allowed a first down since DSU’s first possession and forces another punt. Hawaii takes over from its own 17 with 13:57 left in the second quarter.

    SECOND QUARTER

    6:46: TOUCHDOWN RAINBOW WARRIORS after Tylan Hines takes a punt return 44 yards TO THE HOUSE with 10 seconds left in the first quarter. Hawaii leads 14-0. Hines’ return was UH’s first punt return for a touchdown since Scott Harding had a 69-yard touchdown against UNLV in 2012.

    6:40: Another punt for Hawaii as Delaware State gets the ball at the 1.

    6:34: After forcing another three-and-out, Hawaii gets the ball back on its own 24 with 4:24 left in the first quarter.

    6:30: Hawaii goes three-and-out and punts. For two drives in the first quarter, Hawaii threw instead of ran on third-and-1.

    6:26: Hawaii forces another three-and-out and Delaware State will punt from the shadow of its own goal line. UH gets the ball on its own 29 with 7:26 left in the first quarter.

    6:22: Delaware State will begin from its own 25 after a touchback on the kickoff.

    6:19: TOUCHDOWN HAWAII. Tamatoa Mokiao-Atimalala hauls in an 11-yard touchdown pass with 9:35 left in the first quarter.

    6:14: Delaware State gains a first down before Hawaii does but not much after that and punts. Hawaii gets the ball back on its own 39 with 11:01 left in the first quarter.

    6:10: Hawaii goes three-and-out and punts to the Delaware 5.

    6:07: Tylan Hines returns the opening kickoff to the 31 yard line.

    6:06 p.m.: Delaware State wins the coin toss and elects to defer. Hawaii will receive to begin the 2024 season.

    FIRST QUARTER

    Pregame: Hawaii is in its traditional all black uniforms, while Delaware State is in its baby blue helmet, white jerseys and white helmets.
