HONOLULU (KHON2) — Portions of North Shore Maui saw heavy rains Thursday night into Friday morning leading to flash flooding in some areas.

Workers at Twin Falls in Haiku, Maui showed video of a flooded river and the two falls merging as one.

“It’s been a long time since we flooded like that,” said Piilani Luu Loakealiaki. “Maybe about a year ago.”

The trail was open on Friday, but swimming was not allowed.

She posted the video onto a visitor page to raise awareness about the dangerous conditions on the roads and on trails.

Over by Maliko Gulch, resident Eve Hogan took a video of a flash flood starting on Friday morning outside her home, and the video shows how quickly a flash flood can happen.

She wants people to take streams seriously and warns of hiking in them during stormy conditions.

“It doesn’t have to be raining where you are, it can be raining above you so if you happen to be playing in a stream bed, be careful and listen cause you could usually hear the water coming,” Hogan said. “You want to make sure you’re not in water’s way when it decides to come, it’s extremely powerful.”

The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency said about four to eight inches of rain fell over portions of Maui overnight into Friday, and one to three inches are expected for windward Oahu.

But officials are more concerned about the heat heading into the holiday weekend.

“It’s supposed to be about 10 degrees hotter,” explained Don Aweau, HI-EMA executive officer. “So I would say almost 100 degrees from the heavy humidity.”
