HONOLULU (KHON2) — The Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement’s 2024 Native Hawaiian Convention is coming up next week on the Big Island, including a makeke featuring local makers. CNHA cultural ambassador Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu joined Take2 live Tuesday morning to share more details about the event.

“The Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement’s (CNHA) 2024 Native Hawaiian Convention will be held from Sept. 17 – 19, 2024 on Hawai’i Island at the Hilton Waikoloa Village. This year’s theme ʻExperience Hawai’i Island,ʻ will feature the cultural stories and communities of Moku o Keawe and will bring together the Hawaiian community, from ‘ōpio to kūpuna, in celebration of a path forward. The convention will feature discussions and workshops on a wide variety of topics ranging from housing, fashion, tourism, education, and more,” Kumu Hina said.

The event will feature more than 100 breakout sessions covering various topics, including education, homeownership, business resources and self-determination.

“A major highlight will be the mākeke, open daily from 8 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., which showcases local vendors and Hawaiʻi-owned businesses. We also will have a Fashion, Food & Culture Showcase featuring some of Hawai’i’s top designers, chefs and musicians on Wed., Sept. 18, and a live KHON debate from the convention featuring Hawai’i Island mayoral candidates on Thurs., Sept. 19,” she said.

Kumu Hina also brought in some of the products that will be featured at the mākeke

“Attendees can explore and support 90 local Hawai’i-owned businesses at the mākeke (Market), open daily from 8 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. during the convention,” Kumu Hina said. “The Mākeke will spotlight local makers from across the state, while also highlighting some select artisans based on Hawaii Island including Sea Salts of Hawaii, Wai Meli, Akaka Falls Farms, Little Hands Hawaii and more. We’ll also feature our in-house featured artist Wela Designs. Uncle Wela makes incredible traditional Hawaiian weaponry, as well as other hand-crafted objects.”
