HONOLULU (KHON2) — The Hawaiian Humane Society is launching a new program to offer field trips for shelter dogs on Oahu. HHS communications manager Brandy Shimabukuro joined Take2 Wednesday morning to talk story about what the program can offer to residents and visitors.

“ʻĪlio Explorers is a field trip program that pairs our animal-loving community with shelter dogs from the Hawaiian Humane Society’s Mōʻiliʻili Campus or Kosasa Family Campus at Hoʻopili for a day of fun and exploration to dog-friendly locations on Oʻahu, providing them with exercise, socialization and a break from the shelter environment. Hawaiian Humane partnered with the Hawaiʻi Visitors & Convention Bureau to curate a list of locations, inviting both kamaʻāina and visitors alike the opportunity to spend a day exploring dog-friendly beaches, hiking trails and other destinations,” Shimabukuro said. “It’s such an incredible way to enjoy a day out, but it also makes a massive positive impact on dogs waiting to be adopted. Research has shown that similar short-term excursion programs like these are beneficial to shelter dogs’ physical and mental well-being. They also introduce shelter dogs to new potential adopters, so it’s a win-win for all.”

Reservations are required and are available at HawaiianHumane.org/ilioexplorers.

“There is a field trip donation fee of $50 for kamaʻāina and $150 for visitors, which helps to underwrite the costs of running this new program and supports the care of all shelter pets,” Shimabukuro said. “Once you’ve booked your appointment, explorers will receive a brief orientation on safety, program requirements, and dog behavior before being introduced to their new furry partner in adventure. Each explorer will be assigned an adventure pack, which includes everything they’ll need for their field trip, including a collapsible water bowl, dog seat belt, harness, leash, towel, and treats.”

More information about what is available and rules can be found on the Hawaiian Humane’s website.
