The University of Hawaii men’s basketball team has gained a commitment from Hunter Carter, a dynamic 6-foot-6 high school guard.

Carter is currently attending Accelerated Schools in Denver and will be a college freshman next fall.

Carter chose Hawaii over scholarship offers from Washington, Boise State, Portland, Seattle, Montana State, UT-Arlington and Monmouth. He can sign his National Letter of Intent as soon as Nov. 13.

“I kept saying when I was over there, I was like, ‘Man, I could see myself living here.’ I just kept saying that over and over and spoke it into existence,” Carter told KHON2 sports director Rob DeMello. “The atmosphere and like, all the people are just so kind and so amazing. I just seen the football game against UCLA and then the volleyball game. I want to play and I want to look in the crowds and see everyone cheering and see everyone jumping and people screaming, I want to be a part of that.

“Coach (Eran) Ganot is a great coach and he’s trying to play a faster pace and that’s really my game. Fast pace. Make the right play. Also, can score when I need it. And there’s a lot of guys, a lot of talented guys that I feel like I can benefit from. And also I can help them benefit as well.”

When will these programs and organizations understand the hype doesn’t matter especially when year after year, the results fall far from short. Both football, basketball are what I’m thinking of but baseball, soccer and volleyball here isn’t much different. Lots of hype, very little follow through and plenty of disappointment.
