KAKAAKO, Hawaii (KHON2) — A popular gourmet hot dog spot in Kakaako will be closing for good after a 17-year run.

Hank’s Haute Dogs is known for its unique creations such as the “Lobster Dog” and “Truffle Cheese Fries.” It began as a small hole-in-the-wall in 2006 by Henry ‘Hank’ Adaniya who moved from Chicago to reconnect with his family roots on the islands.

He pursued his lifelong dream of reinventing his parents’ Kapiolani Park hot dog stand. His restaurant has been recognized through Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, Man v. Food and Somebody Feed Phil.

Through his playful twists on hot dogs, Hank hoped his vision would “stimulate the culinary scene in Honolulu” and bring ideas to a new generation of chefs.

I just turned 70, and see part of my future giving back to the industry through consulting, particularly in burgeoning independent restaurants. It’s always been a hard business and in today’s post-pandemic climate, it is even more challenging. It’s been quite an accomplishment to survive, let alone to succeed. After 45 years in this biz, it’s time for one last food chapter in my life. What that is, I still don’t know yet, but it’ll come around.

Now that he has accomplished his dream, Hank is ready to hang up his apron. Reports said the Buho Restaurant Group is expected to take over the space in October.

“I will miss Hank’s a lot, but who knows, maybe someone will emerge with interest in taking it forward. I have had some wonderful employees who embraced my dream, and a multitude of loyal customers who’ve supported us over the years. I am grateful for them all.”

Hank’s Haute Dogs will serve up their final creations on Thursday, Oct. 17. Until then, they will be open daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
