Holding sole possession of first place in the Big West Conference, the University of Hawai’i women’s soccer team heads back on the road for a key match against UC San Diego on Thursday.

The Rainbow Wahine, 4-0 in conference play, are riding a six-game winning streak, matching the program’s longest streak in 21 years.

A major factor in their success has been freshman goalkeeper Kennedy Justin, the reigning Big West Defensive Player of the Week, who has recorded three consecutive shutouts. Her performances have been bolstered by a strong collective defensive effort, with Justin facing just 25 shots during the streak.

“I think it’s good for the team overall to see the work we’ve been putting in together,” Justin said. “The defense makes it easier for me to be a better goalkeeper, and that’s really what’s contributing to the success.”

Hawaii’s current 4-0 start in Big West play marks the best conference start in program history. One more victory would give them seven consecutive wins for the first time ever. Justin, who wasn’t born the last time UH won six straight games, reflected on the team’s achievement.

“Yeah, it’s kind of funny because the last time this happened was 21 years ago,” Justin joked. “I always tell my 21-year-old teammates, ‘You guys are so old, you’re ancient!’ But I’m super excited for the possibility of making history with this team. All the work we’ve put in is paying off, and we’re showing that we’re the team to beat.”

The Rainbow Wahine will face UC San Diego on Thursday at 4 p.m. HST, with the game streaming on ESPN+.
