HONOLULU (KHON2) — Fort the first time, the Honolulu Police Department (HPD) and the Marines conducted joint traffic enforcement on the H3 freeway to slow down speeding and dangerous drivers on Monday, Oct. 7.

Late at night on the H3 Freeway is when drivers are out to race.
“Between midnight and 2 a.m., there’s a lot of complaints of race clubs that come over. Not only is it the speeding, but it’s the noise from their loud mufflers,” stated HPD Major Shelly Paiva.
Residents in the area complain about the honking and engine revving that wakes up the neighbors.
“It’s a very serious problem, because we hear it all the time, people feel that when you’re on H3, you can go as fast as you want,” stated Honolulu City Councilmember Esther Kiaʻāina.

“We weren’t out there trying to issue citations. These were warnings. Pople needed a little bit of a reminder. You’re coming up to this area where it goes down from 55 to 35 and then you’re going to come up to a dead stop at a gate,” said Major Kellie Lundmark, MCBH Provost Marshal.
HPD said the communities reports and concerns were validated.
“We were quite shocked at the amount of people and how far over the speed limit they were going,” said Maj. Paiva.
Neighbors near the H3 said traffic cameras would help.
“SB 2350 has mandated for the State Department of Transportation to have cameras positioned on the interstate highways. So, one of them is going to be the H3 on the Halawa side. Hopefully, they can catch these people that are doing it,” stated Donald Sakamoto, At-Large Treasurer for the Kaneohe Neighborhood Board.

MCBH and HPD plan to conduct more traffic enforcements especially as the holiday season approaches. When they do, officers will not be as lax, according to Maj. Paiva.
