How to keep you, your ohana safe this Halloween

HONOLULU (KHON2) — With Halloween less than two weeks away, now is the time to read up on safety tips to keep you and your keiki safe on the spookiest night of the year.

The Queen’s North Hawaii Community Hospital compiled a list of tips for the entire ohana to follow before the holiday and Halloween night.

When choosing a costume for your keiki, officials advise parents to avoid dark-colored costumes and use make-up instead of masks.

Additionally, the costume should not restrict movement.

For added safety measures, ensure the outfit is fire-proof with reflective fabric or tape to help improve visibility.

Instead of trick-or-treating, Queen’s suggests planning a Halloween party or attending a community event near you .

Those who will be participating in trick-or-treating activities should start early in their own neighborhoods. Keiki should remain in well-lit areas and follow pedestrian rules such as walking on sidewalks and crossing the street only at a corner or stop light.

While walking on the streets, keiki should also steer clear of strangers.

Dark areas and homes should be avoided when trick-or-treating. Keiki should never enter any homes without parental permission.

Of course, the number one rule and advice is to remain vigilant and report anything suspicious to 911.

Once trick-or-treating activities have commenced, parents should inspect all Halloween candy before allowing their children to eat it.

Candy should be thrown out if it is unsealed or not in its original packaging.
