Host: Matt Watson
Guests: Abbie Stirling, Andrew Skinner
On today’s Eye On The Valley, your host Matt Watson talks with Abbie Stirling, Academic Coach with SCVis iLeadonline school. Abbie has been working with the online school for ten years and enjoys being able to connect with her learners through their regular courses but also through Advisory. Abbie says the Advisory is a perfect time to catch up with the learners once a week and review any questions they may have. She talks with Matt about her online learners having the opportunity to hear from a UC Santa Cruz scientist who has been studying glaciers in Antarctica and Alaska. Besides the state standards, learners at SCVi and iLeadonline schools focus on PBL, Project Based Learning as well as CTE, Career and Technical Education. A CTE offers courses in everything from sports medicine, finance, entertainment, journalism and more. Additionally, iLeadonline offers Track C which is a summer-time program. SCVi is a network of charter schools offering free public education in Castaic, Agua Dulce and Lancaster.
In the second half of the show, Matt welcomes Andrew Skinner in studio. Andrew is the founder of Triumph Foundation, a nonprofit offering support for adults, children and veterans who have suffered a catastrophic accident or disease leaving them wheelchair-bound. Andrew began Triumph after a 2004 snowboarding accident left him with vertebrae 4, 5 and 6 severed, paralyzed from the neck down. He wanted to offer help to those who experience the same fate as he did, showing them that they can still live a full life. Triumph Foundation serves the Central Coast, Inland Empire, San Diego and more and has a grant program for those who may have inadequate insurance or struggle with meeting expenses. Triumph offers sporting activities and recreational events as well as physical, mental and emotional support. A fundraiser is being held July 12 at the Universal City Hilton featuring dinner and music. Additionally, Triumph is hiring an Operations Coordinator and is currently taking applications. For more information on the fundraiser or to inquire about the job opening, call Triumph at 661-803-3700 or go to Triumph-foundation.org
