The Santa Clarita City Council held its regular meeting in Valencia Tuesday night.

The Santa Clarita City Council heard a presentation on the annual allocation of Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and HOME Investment Partnership Program funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, among other topics.

According to City documents, these block grant funds are designed to primarily serve the needs of the City’s low- and moderate-income residents. In order to receive these funds, the City is required to submit a five-year Consolidated Plan and a one-year Annual Action Plan.

The city’s current consolidated plan is set to expire on June 30.

Collaborative with city residents, City staff members identified major areas of concern for the upcoming plan extending to 2029, including improving, maintaining and expanding affordable housing, improving and expanding public facilities and infrastructure in lower-income areas, providing services to address homelessness and homelessness prevention, providing supportive human services, addressing the impact of COVID-19 on lower-income residents and finally planning and administration, according to presenter Tracy Sullivan.

As a part of providing these improvements, non-profit, community-based organizations were able to submit applications to provide those services.

A total of eight programs are recommended for funding under CDBG, and a total of seven programs are recommended for funding under CDBG-CV, totaling 15 programs recommended for funding. Also recommended for funding are public improvements to the Newhall Community Center, according to City documents.

As recommended, the Santa Clarita City Council approved the submission of the five-year Consolidated Plan.

The next City Council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 28.
