At Wednesday’s William S. Hart Union School District Board meeting, it was announced that 29 district employees are planned to be laid off at the end of the school year.

Originally, 53 full-time certificated positions were planned to be eliminated due to a reduction or discontinuation of certain types of services.

The district determined it was overstaffed in counseling, English, math, physical education, science, social science, special education and student support program specialists.

Out of the original pool of 53, the district rescinded 24 of the notices due to retirements and resignations following March 15.

With 29 employees now on the cuff of being laid off, 21 requested a hearing with the state Office of Administrative Hearings.

The hearing took place on April 17 and 24, 2024.

The administrative law judge has since issued a proposed decision.

The board then voted to adopt, deny or modify the proposal.

Board member Joe Messina led the charge by motioning to approve while the rest of the board stood silent and unsure how to vote.

“I know this is uncomfortable for us but it’s something we know about,” said Messina.

Eventually, the board agreed to pass the proposal.

The district is actively exploring options and hopes that further resignations or retirements will allow more teachers to have their layoffs rescinded.
