Following a 5.2 earthquake in Kern County that was felt as far as Santa Clarita, some residents wondered what to do if the epicenter was closer.

Depending on whether you are inside, outside, or driving, there are different ways to protect yourself during an earthquake.

    • Indoors – If you are indoors, the best thing to do is stay indoors, according to the U.S. Geological Survey ( USGS ). While inside, get under a table or desk and hang on for the ride. An alternative to getting under a desk is to move into a hallway or against a wall. It is important to stay clear of windows, fireplaces and heavy furniture. Do not run up or down the stairs during an earthquake or run outside while the building is shaking to prevent getting hit by any falling objects.
    • Outside—It is best for anyone outside to stay in an open area away from buildings, powerlines and anything that may fall.
    • Driving – If driving, carefully move your car as far out of traffic as possible. Do not stop on or under a bridge or overpass or under trees, light posts, power lines, or signs. Stay inside your car until the shaking stops. Watch for breaks in the pavement and fallen rocks when you resume driving.

Following an earthquake , ensure no one is injured and if any injuries are sustained, provide first aid to those who need it.

Additionally, check for fires and any other hazards. If gas leaks occur, do not light matches or candles.

Avoid using cell phones if the power is cut for an extended period.

It is wise to have an earthquake supply kit with essentials such as blankets, first aid supplies, a fire extinguisher, a portable radio and food supplies prior to an earthquake.
