What was a typical lunch break for Saugus High School employee Wendy McNamara last week turned into an unforgettable moment when her car battery died and an unexpected hero came to her aid.

While on her lunch break, McNamara ordered a sandwich from Firehouse Subs. As the food was being prepared, she went to Central Park to relax as she usually does on her breaks.

When it was time to pick up her lunch, she realized her car battery had died and her vehicle wouldn’t start.

“ Luckily, I have AAA and I called for help,” said McNamara. “My wait time for them to come was an hour and a half.”

As McNamara sat in her hot car, waiting for AAA, she called Firehouse Subs to let them know she was having car issues and was unable to pick up her order.

After explaining to the Firehouse Subs employee why she couldn’t make it, he assured her the order would be canceled and there would be no chargers.

But she didn’t know the employee she had been talking to was the owner, Jeff Press.

“After I hung up the phone, employees said, ‘Let’s make the sandwich and try to find her,’” said Press. “By the sound of her voice, she sounded really upset and I had a moment and thought, let me try to do something nice.”

As McNamara waited for AAA, Press and his employees prepared to surprise her with lunch.

Ten minutes after getting off the phone with Press, a truck pulled alongside McNamara’s broken-down car and asked, “Are you waiting for a tow truck?”

A bit confused, McNamara said yes and asked why, wondering if the truck driver was with AAA.

The driver then got out of his truck and said he was the person from Firehouse Subs she spoke to and that he was the owner. Press then reached into his truck and handed McNamara a sub, a drink and coupons for her next visit.

But Press’s good deed didn’t end there. He would continue to help her situation by giving McNamara a jump start so she could start the car and use the air conditioning while she waited for AAA to replace her battery.

“ He had the kindest soul and I will be forever grateful and never forget this man’s kindness,” said McNamara. “This is one of those things that restores your faith in mankind. Jeff, if you are reading this, thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
