To raise money for the homeless, New Way SCV decided to take a unique approach to fundraising and held the inaugural “Hoops for Hart” two Sundays ago.

New Way SCV , a 503c nonprofit, took to the courts of the Santa Clarita Sports Complex to raise money for homeless students within the Hart District through 3-on-3 basketball games.

Over 40 teams signed up to participate in the Hoops for Hart tournament with a $100 buy-in per squad.

The team grouping was separated by age and ranged from 8 up to senior citizens.

One of the groupings that won their age group and a winning bonus donated their earnings back to New Way SCV. Each player from that winning team also plays for the Statham Academy , a local basketball academy that trains kids from 1st to 12th grade.

“It was incredible. Basketball culture is a powerful culture full of support,” said Jess Guidroz , founder of The New Way SCV. “In SCV, the basketball community always comes out and people love to play sports. When you get to do it for a good cause, it’s that much cooler.

For Guidroz, it was a perfect combination of basketball and the ability to raise money. During his youth, he spent hours on the court, from elementary school to Canyon High School and College of the Canyons.

By combining two of his passions, Guidroz raised thousands of dollars for homeless students in the Hart District.

This year, New Way SCV plans to support the school pantries that are available at each Hart District school and supply students with toiletries, clothes and food.

For anyone who missed Hoops for Hart but would like to participate in future events, fear not—two fundraisers are coming soon.

The next fundraiser is a cornhole tournament at Lucky Luke Brewery that is set to be held on November 9. Afterward, the Paseo Club will host the “Wine Walk” event on November 16.
