An explosive offensive was the driving force behind the Vikings’ victory over the Grizzlies on Thursday night.

Running back Brian Bonner was the engine that drove Valencia’s (3-4, 3-0) offense. He scored five touchdowns, four of which were in the first half.

Bonner ran for a 21-yard touchdown on the game’s opening drive to set the tone.

But defensively, the Vikings struggled and allowed Golden Valley’s (5-2, 1-2) Jamison Torres to score a 20-yard rushing touchdown.

Valencia’s second offensive drive aimed to surprise the Grizzlies and utilized a wildcat formation with Bonner. But the Vikings were the ones taken aback as the snap flew above Bonner’s head, pinning Valencia against their own goal line.

Unable to convert, Valencia was forced to punt to a fired-up Golden Valley Offense.

With momentum on their side, the Grizzlies managed to convert on fourth down, allowing Torres to score his second touchdown from 15 yards out.

Following the touchdown drive, the Vikings managed to block the PAT, only giving Golden Valley a 13-7 lead.

The Grizzlies’ lead was short-lived as Valencia’s offense hunkered down and fed Bonner the ball for his third touchdown of the night.

The Golden Valley offense, however, showed no signs of giving up and scored a touchdown with a pass from quarterback Brandon Conteras to Anthony Seragusa. To even the score at 21, Torres ran the ball in for the two-point conversion.

In the minutes leading up to halftime, Bonner ran for 40 yards for his fourth touchdown, while Brady Bretthauer completed his first touchdown pass of the game to Nick Seymour.

Before taking a 35-21 lead going into halftime, Bretthauer was on the sideline, hyping up his team to keep fighting and not let up.

“[Bretthauer] is a special football player, and he’s a great quarterback, but he’s a tremendous leader,” said Valencia Head Coach Larry Muir.

Muir champions Bretthauer’s ability to rally the team, whether by being tough on his teammates or encouraging them.

Bretthauer’s encouragement seemed to have sparked a fire on the Viking’s sideline because Valencia scored three more touchdowns and only gave up 7-points to Golden Valley in the second half.

Bonner and Seymour, who had previously scored, aided Valencia’s second-half scoring efforts.

Symeon Wilkins even got in on the action, returning an interception for a 74-yard touchdown for Valencia.

Although the Viking defense held Golden Valley to a single touchdown in the second half, the Grizzlies’ offense continuously moved the ball well through the air, posing challenges for Valencia’s secondary.

“I don’t think we played well tonight. We made a lot of mistakes,” said Muir. “We didn’t trust our eyes very well and we didn’t take good angles.”

While Muir saw some issues with the defense, he credited Golden Valley for scheming up good plays and catching Valencia off guard.

“All the respect in the world to Golden Valley; they did a really good job of putting their players in really good positions, so we have to get better from it,” said Muir.

Next up for Valencia is a Friday matchup at College of the Canyons versus the Hart Hawks.

The Grizzlies will be playing the West Ranch Wildcats in an effort to get back on track.
