HOUSTON (KIAH) — We haven’t had rain in weeks it seems with recent rain chances topping the likes of 20% around the local area, which is triggering allergies in many due to the drying effects in our environment. As temperatures drop and leaves begin to change, fall allergy season in southeast Texas has kicked into high gear. Cooler weather can be a welcome change, ushering in some relief but it brings with it, higher pollen counts and a whole lot of sneezing and watery eyes to name a couple.

    Common Fall Allergens

Fall season allergies are common and many in our area suffer from fall allergens like ragweed, mold, grass pollens as main culprits.

    Ragweed

Ragweed in particular can be the most harsh on allergies, and can be know to cause the most irritable symptoms like sneezing, itchy eyes, runny noses.

    Mold

Mold levels also rise as the dampness from fall rains creates a perfect environment for spores to grow.

Houston’s warm climate allows plants to produce pollen well into the autumn months. The high humidity and occasional storms also contribute to an increase in mold spores, which can worsen symptoms. For many, the shift between hot and cooler days can make managing allergies even more challenging.

    Tips to manage fall allergies

    • Stay indoors during peak pollen times: Pollen counts are typically higher in the morning, so try to limit outdoor activities during these hours.
    • Keep windows closed: While fresh air is tempting, open windows allow pollen and mold spores into your home.
    • Shower after being outside: Pollen can cling to your skin and hair, so washing up after outdoor activities can reduce exposure.
    • Consult a doctor: If symptoms become severe, allergy medications or treatments may help alleviate discomfort.
    • Houston’s fall can be beautiful, but for allergy sufferers, it’s important to take precautions to manage symptoms and enjoy the season.
    • Wearing a mask can also prevent allergens from entering you body. Protective eyewear may seem like an odd suggestion, but could mean relief for some.
