HOUSTON (KIAH) — “Fatty snow” is a term used informally to describe snowflakes. It’s heavy wet snow that starts out just like the light and fluffy stuff. The change takes place on its way down to the ground in temperatures close to or at freezing, around 32°F (0°C). This allowing the snowflakes to gather more moisture as they fall, creating thick, clumpy flakes.

As flakes fall from the air, temperatures at the surface become warmer. That causes the snowflakes to partially melt. This is when you would expect fat flakes. Fatty snow can stack up pretty quickly and can to be heavy. Even difficult to shovel, often leading to slushy or dense snow cover.
