    Going to Galveston this weekend? Plan for these closures

    HOUSTON (KIAH) — If you plan on going to Galveston this weekend, there are several events happening that could cause a bunch of traffic. This weekend, the island will host the Toughest 10K, the Beach Girl Triathlon, Bike Around the Bay and ARToberfest Galveston.

    The O’Connell Homecoming Parade will go on today starting at 1 p.m. and will last until 2 p.m. However, rolling closures started around 11:30 a.m. as the parade lined up on Avenue M between 21st and 23rd streets.

    This is the route for closures:

    • Begin at 23rd & Avenue M (O’Connell High School)
    • Proceed North on 23rd Street to Ball (Avenue H)
    • East on Ball / Ave H to 21st Street
    • North on 21st Street to Strand
    • West on Strand to 25th Street
    • South on 25th Street to Avenue N
    • East on Avenue N to 24th Street
    • North on 24th Street to Avenue M
    • East on Avenue M to 23rd Street
    • End at O’Connell High School

    The Beach Girl Triathlon will begin tomorrow, October 19 from 7 a.m.-9 a.m. at the Holiday Inn Seaside Resort on 19320 FM 3005. The bicycle portion of the event outside will take place on FM 3005 from Kahala Drive to 1st Street. Participants will be using the two innermost lanes on FM 3005 while other traffic will be restricted to one lane in both directions.

    The bicycle route for the event is as follows:

    • Begin at Holiday Inn Clubs Vacations Resort at 11745 FM 3005
    • East on FM 3005 to the U-TURN spot just before Cove View Blvd
    • West on FM 3005 to the U-TURN spot just before 11 Mile Road
    • East on FM 3005 to Holiday Inn Clubs Vacations Resort at 11745 FM 3005

    The 27th annual ARToberFEST hosted by The Grand 1894 Opera House will start tomorrow through Sunday, October 20. Tomorrow’s event will take place from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. Temporary street closures will start today at Noon until Sunday, October 20 at 8 p.m.

    The Toughest 10K is an annual race that will return Sunday, October 20 from 7:30 a.m. until 10 a.m. The race will be hosted on the I-45 Causeway and finish lines will be at the Galveston County Daily News at 8522 Teichman Road and the turn-around point on Tiki Island. Closures will re-open right after the race is over.

    Temporary Lane & Exit Closures:

    • I-45 Southbound Turn Lane
    • I-45 Westernmost Southbound Traffic Lane (Lane next to Turn Lane)
    • Exit to Teichman Road Ramp
    • Feeder Road (Teichman Road Ramp to Lewis Lane)
    • Lewis Lane (Feeder Road to 89th Street)*
    • 89th Street (Lewis Lane to Teichman Road)*
    • Teichman Road (89th to Daily News)*

    Bike Around the Bay is a two-day 170-mile bicycle ride around Galveston Bay. It will begin at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow. Participants will bike from Ferry Landing to Harborside Drive to 25th Street to Seawall Boulevard to 81st Street and stay overnight at Moody Gardens. On the 20th, they will move from Moody Gardens to Jones Drive to Stewart Road to 61st Street to Causeway.

    Closure information:

    -The south Seawall parking lane, and south lane of eastbound traffic from 25th to 81st Streets will be restricted to cyclists only.

    -Vehicular traffic will remain open in both directions, however eastbound traffic from 25th to 81st Street will be temporarily restricted to one lane until the riders complete the Seawall section of the course.
