The first Saturday of the Humboldt County Fair draws out a large crowd

The first Saturday of the Humboldt County Fair is one of the busiest. We attended and the first thing we did was speak with her royal highness, the Dairy Princess, about the cow auction.

“Local dairy farmers get together and they bid on local children’s FFA and 4H dairy cattle and it really helps support those children. It’s so important because they need to go to college,” Grace Seilacci, the District One Dairy Princess, said. “Look for the California milk seal on your dairy products when you’re buying. It supports local dairy farmers here in Humboldt County and in California.”

Taking on the title of Dairy Princess is no easy feat. You have to have a true passion for agriculture—specifically dairy.

“It’s amazing. I love being the Dairy Princess. I love to promote agriculture and more specifically, the dairy industry,” Seilacci said. “It’s really important to keep our dairies going in order to feed the world.”

We also spoke to an FFA junior agriculturist.

“This is Mocha. She’s easily my favorite girl that I’ve ever had. She’s just a gorgeous cow,” Jaiden Johnson, an FFA member, said. “And I’ve been so lucky to be able to show her these past four years. And she’s done very well in showmanship. Second place the last three years. So had the round robin again. And she’s won lots and lots of champion ribbons. I just love getting to work with the animals and going with the animals because. It’s just so Fun and it’s been amazing experience and I’ve learned a lot through just being able to work with an animal and what that connection.”

After petting the baby cows, we had to test out the rides. Later, we checked out the veggie auction and we were not disappointed. We saw one basket sell for 900 dollars.

If you missed out on the fun today, the Humboldt County Fair runs through Labor Day.
